In southern Arkansas alone, approximately 151 fields have produced more than 500 million barrels of oil and condensate since the 1937 discovery at Smackover Field in Union County.

Historical Background
Oil was first discovered in the Smackover Formation in 1937 when a deep test at the shallow Smackover Field in Union County, Arkansas encountered prolific production. This discovery initiated decades of exploration that established the Smackover as one of the Gulf Coast's premier Jurassic objectives.
The formation has produced from conventional oolitic reservoirs for nearly 90 years. Beginning in 2009-2010, operators began testing horizontal wells in the Brown Dense interval, seeking to establish a new unconventional play.
Geological Characteristics
The Smackover Formation is predominantly limestone in southern Arkansas, divided into the upper Reynolds oolite member and lower Brown Dense member. The formation overlies the Norphlet Formation or Louann Salt and is overlain by the Buckner Anhydrite and Cotton Valley Group.
The Reynolds oolite formed in high-energy shoal environments, creating excellent reservoir quality. The Brown Dense consists of dense argillaceous limestone and dark calcareous shale deposited in deeper water settings, serving as both source rock and unconventional reservoir target.
Reservoir Properties
The Reynolds oolite exhibits excellent reservoir properties with porosity of 15-25% and permeability up to several hundred millidarcys in the best facies. Secondary dolomitization enhances reservoir quality in many fields.
The Brown Dense has much lower conventional porosity and permeability but contains significant organic matter (TOC 1-4%) and has generated hydrocarbons that charged both the Reynolds oolite and underlying Norphlet reservoirs.
Production History
Southern Arkansas Smackover production peaked in the 1970s-1980s during primary production from oolitic reservoirs. Many fields have been waterflooded or are candidates for enhanced oil recovery. The Deep Smackover Gas Trend in Mississippi has produced over 750 Bcf from overpressured carbonate reservoirs.
Brown Dense horizontal wells have shown variable results, with some operators exiting the play while others continue testing. Technology improvements may eventually unlock this unconventional carbonate resource.
Drilling & Completion Economics
Conventional Smackover wells cost $3-5 million depending on depth and completion requirements. Horizontal Brown Dense wells cost $6-10 million with extended laterals and multi-stage completions.
Acidizing is commonly used to improve carbonate reservoir connectivity. Enhanced oil recovery operations including waterflood and CO2 injection extend the productive life of mature fields.
